Back pain itself is a symptom that indicates medical condition and it’s not diagnosis. There are many back pain causes and medical problems which can be a cause of back pain. Some of these are discussed below.
You may have mechanical problems because of how you move the spine or how you feel while moving the spine in particular ways. Probably, most common of back pain causes is the condition known as ‘intervertebral disc degeneration’. It means that discs that are located between vertebrae of your spine are simply breaking down as you age. With deterioration, their ability of cushioning gets lost. This problem results in pain if your back has stress on it. Back pain can also be a result of wear and tear of facet joints, large joints which are a connection between vertebrae. Spasms, ruptured discs, and muscle tension are some of the other back pain causes that can fall under this category.
Different spine injuries like fractures and sprains can lead to either chronic or short-lived back pain. The sprains are the tears in ligaments which offer support to your spine, and they can be a result of lifting or twisting improperly. Osteoporosis often leads to fractured vertebrae. It is a condition which causes porous, weak bones. Another less common cause of back pain is severe injuries caused by falls and accidents.
Acquired Diseases and Conditions
There are many medical conditions which can contribute to or cause back pain. These can include spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, different types of arthritis like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, etc. Though osteoporosis isn’t painful but it can cause painful fractures in vertebrae. Some other back pain causes include kidney stones, infections, pregnancy, endometriosis (buildup of the uterine tissue outside uterus), and fibromyalgia.
Tumors and Infections
Even though they aren’t amongst the common back pain causes, infections can result in pain when vertebrae or the discs which cushion vertebrae are involved. Tumors are also comparatively rare when considered as a cause of back pain. They often appear in back due to cancer which has been spread from somewhere else in body.
Even though the back pain causes are normally physical, it’s also important that one knows the fact that the emotional stress plays its part in determining the severity of pain and the time for which it lasts as well. There are different possible ways in which stress may affect your body. For instance, your back muscles can be caused to get tense and become painful. Untreated anxiety and depression can also worsen your back pain. Similarly, sleeplessness or insomnia can also be a contributor to your back pain.
Whatever the cause of your back pain may be, it is advised to get a proper back pain treatment after consulting with your doctor. Otherwise, you will only end up worsening your condition and leaving yourself in more pain than what you were initially experiencing.
